Test the switch manually to make sure the light is working. Gently tug on the wires to ensure a proper connection. Step 12: Connect the wires to the respective ports and tighten the screws on the switch to secure the wires. To remove simply hold them with a pair of pliers and move it up and down, to break off the metallic tags. Tip: In order to ensure that the switch fits without any issues, remove the extra metallic tags on the side of the switch (3 on each side). DO NOT USE THE TRAVELER DURING A SINGLE SWITCH INSTALLATION. Step 11: Identify the ports on the smart switch that is labelled as LINE, LOAD and NEUTRAL, as shown below. Step 10: You should now have 3 open wires -> LINE, LOAD and NEUTRAL. Step 9: Cover the connection made in Step 8 with a wire nut and ensure that the piece of wire is connected securely, but gently tugging it. Twist one side of this wire with the neutral wire bunch using pliers. Now cut a ~6 inch long electrical wire (preferably WHITE color) and strip it from both sides. Step 8: Remove the wire nut on the white wires exposing the connection. Step 7: Next, within the box identify the bunch of neutral wires that are all joined together (WHITE wires). Mark the wires with insulation tape if needed, in order to identify them. Step 6: Once the LINE is identified, then the other BLACK wire is the LOAD. (This is usually coming from a bundle of other black wires in the panel) Step 5: Identify the live wire or LINE (Black Color) that was running to the switch. Tip: Before removing the wires, it is a good idea to mark the wires with paper tape and take a picture.
Step 4: Once it is confirmed that none of the wires are live, remove the terminals from the switch that is intended to be changed - Separate the switch from the wires.
Tip: Before proceeding, it is a good practice to put a long strip of tape on the switches that are not being touched (across the terminals). Step 3: Using the Live Wire Tester, check and ensure that none of the wires are live. Pull out ALL the switches carefully, leaving them hanging with the wires that they are connected to.

Step 2: Carefully remove the switch plate and then unscrew ALL the switches on that particular panel (even if only one switch is being changed) using the flat head screw driver and the electric drill respectively. Step 1: Shut the main power from the electrical panel. Installation of a Single Switch (Load Controlled by 1 Switch)

In order to prepare for install ensure that the following items are available This guide is to be used just as a reference and all safety measures should be taken by the installer. SmrtDots is not liable for any damage or issue that may be caused during or after the installation of the switch. It is highly recommended that a licenses electrician is hired for installation of a smart switch. The brands mentioned above are covered here, where the connection ports are identical. There are various brands of smart switches available in the market and are mostly designed with more of less the same principle. Brands covered: Z-Link, Jasco, GE (With Neutral Wire)Īutomation of light switches is a very useful implementation of smart home technology.
